We are a group of citizens concerned about Hong Kong and the Umbrella Movement. Among us are researchers, arts practitioners and students. Some of us stand at the forefront of the movement, while some support in other ways, but we all wish to pool our strengths and start an initiative that facilitates different people's understanding of the political reform and this incident. Through archiving key terms about the movement, we aim at offering objective and useful information to the public who care about the reform and the movement, yet wishing to learn more - including those supporting, opposing or neutral to the issue.

How much do we really know what we mean, by saying "we always stand on the side of the egg in front of the wall", or calling for universal suffrage in the Umbrella Movement? And how well do anti-occupiers, the pro-establishment camp or the indecisive understand protesters' rationale? Some people often consciously recycle certain jargons or catchphrases, and advocate certain ideals, but all efforts turn out unheeded. Others appropriate fashionable terms out of convenience, without knowing their actual meanings and contexts. Reluctance to learn and to think, in addition to limited information, blocks communication across sectors.

    Objectives:

    • Umbrella Terms was launched to list all key terms about the Umbrella Movement, and of the Umbrella Movement, in a fair and objective manner. It provides concise, basic information and references for concepts and personalities related to the movement. By elucidating some of the important concepts, we hope the initiative enriches public understanding of the movement, and facilitates communication across parties.
    • Throughout the debate on political reform and the movement, updates and new catchphrases and jargons pop up every day. Growing out of this specific time and space in Hong Kong, the trendy terminology is rich in historical, social and cultural implications in its own right (including "take the government proposal on board first", "leftard", "normal saline", "tear gas" and "umbrella" etc.). Umbrella Terms thus fills the gap of systematising, in a Wikipedia-like platform, fashionable terms or ideas that originate from social movements but produce less impact in general contexts. Also, terms like "Kuan Ti" and "N95 face masks" resonate strongly with local events or culture. Referencing the evolution of these terms is very important too.
    • Hongkongers with a limited global perspective or limited knowledge about politics can learn a lot from this movement. Terms such as "Lennon Wall" and "colour revolution" are related to social movements worldwide. We wish to bring out these connections in the glossary.
    • It is often not easy to have Chinese and English explanations of the same idea. Umbrella Terms provides bilingual references of key terms to encourage cross-cultural discussions, or translation of local and foreign media reports.
