  • 689

“689” denotes Leung Chun-ying, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, because he secured 689 out of 1200 possible votes from members of the Election Committee in 2012, or 57% – a historical low. It is commonly thought that Leung enjoys an advantage among the electors in the 4 major electoral sectors, thus 689 is an ironic swipe at his election by the small-circle Election Committee in 2012. Coincidental to his election by 689 votes in March 2012, Ma Ying-jeou of the pro-Beijing Kuomintang had been elected to Taiwan’s presidency with 689 million votes two months earlier. Thus 689 satirises Leung’s historically low score, as well as Taiwan’s democratic system.

"689" is used above all to satirise the small-circle Election Committee and to reinforce the demand for popular representation in truly democratic elections for Hong Kong
