One of the tactics used by occupiers when they were verbally abused by opponents, and regarded as an exemplar of peaceful protest.

After the occupy movement spread to Mong Kok, occupiers were often verbally abused and provoked by anti-occupiers. In the afternoon of 4 October 2014, a man and a woman reproached occupiers in the Mong Kok occupy site. One of the occupiers tried to ask others to stay restrained, armed with a megaphone but accidentally pressed the wrong button which played the birthday song. Occupiers then sang along and clapped in unison.

Singing the birthday song was found to be an effective response to anti-occupiers’ attacks, the tactic was often used it to drive away verbal abuse and provocation until opponents left in frustration.
