A hunger strike is a fast in public undertaken to draw attention to a cause and to demonstrate the resolve of those activists pursuing their goals. It is an important tactic employed in non-violent activist campaigns. During the Umbrella Movement, a number of different people went on hunger strikes to express their discontent with the government handling of the protests and to demand for the government to enter into public talks with protesters.

Benny Mok Siu-man, a former government surveyor who knelt down in front of a line of police blocking their advance on 29 September 2014, when police released tear gas into protesting crowds, entered into a hunger strike at the occupied area in Admiralty on 2 October 2014, demanding the government enter into dialogue with protesters and allow their concerns to be voiced. On 11 November 2014, Mok ended his hunger strike after 40 days, making his both the first and the longest hunger strike of the Umbrella Movement.

After the the failed campaign to escalate by encircling the Central Government Complex on 30 November 2014, Scholarism announced on the night of 1 December 2014 that convener Joshua Wong Chi-fung and members Isabella Lo and Prince Wong Chi-yuet had started a hunger strike, demanding the government to resume dialogue with HKFS representatives – their last and only publicized meeting took place on 21 October 2014.

Two additional members, Gloria Cheng Yik-lam and Eddie Ng Man-hin, joined the hunger strike the day after, and by 7 December, 2014, several hundred supporters of the students had started a hunger strike relay where each would go on strike for 28 hours at a time. Occupiers also initiated a “silent read-in to support hunger strikers” outside the strikers’ encampment, hoping to lend some strength and companionship to the striking students. The hunger strike by members of Scholarism ended on 9 December 2014 when Gloria Cheng terminated her strike under medical advice after 142 hours.
