On Mar 18 2014, Taiwanese students occupied the Legislative Yuan (parliament) of the Republic of China, thus beginning the Sunflower Movement. Using sunflowers as their emblem, students voiced their dissatisfaction with how the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement (CSSTA) did not receive sufficient scrutiny before the Legislative Yuan decided to pass it. One common argument against the CSSTA was that it would deal a severe blow to small and medium businesses in Taiwan. “Save our own country” thus became a popular chant among protesters.

Taiwan and Hong Kong share certain traits - for instance, the use of traditional Chinese characters - which distinguish the two territories from the People’s Republic of China; fear of intervention from authorities in Beijing is another common characteristic of both societies. Therefore it was natural that Hong Kongers followed the Sun Flower Movement closely, and later adopted the slogan “Save our own country” for use in Hong Kong. For example, during the July 1 marches in 2014, “Save our own Hong Kong, choose our own government” became a popular rallying cry. Some Hong Kongers believe that they can no longer trust governmental authorities or political parties to resolve the deadlock in political reform towards democracy. Instead, the only way forward is for individual citizens to directly participate in public affairs - and this, is the spirit of Umbrella Movement.
