Started in early October 2014, the “Occupy and Shop Local” movement encourages supporters to patronise neighbourhood shops in Mong Kok, as resistance towards pervasive chain stores backed by big business interests in Hong Kong. The movement also contests anti-occupiers’ view that the protest kills local stores, mobilising volunteers and citizens to communicate with shopkeepers regarding the Umbrella Movement and its ideals.

Initiators call for citizens to visit independent shops instead of chain stores to purchase provisions, meals or lunch boxes. By opting for alternatives, citizens can increase their own choice, enhance the community economy and bonding in the community through communication and networking with shop staff. A list of local shops is compiled and can be supplemented or edited collaboratively by the public. The list shows basic information of shops such as address, phone number and opening hours. All shops are categorised by street as well as by type of product/service. The Facebook page of the movement also posts stories of shopkeepers in support of the Umbrella Movement.

The Occupy and Shop Local movement is based in Mong Kok, but its concerns echo with a pro-local shops initiative in the Causeway Bay occupy site and others that have emerged before the Umbrella Movement. Its Facebook page also contains a territory-wide data bank of shops, related articles and community maps.

On 14 November 2014, the movement published a survey about local businesses in Mong Kok in the name of Mong Kok Local Shops Concern Group. The group surveyed 142 shops in malls and at street level to investigate their operational situations after the area has been occupied for more than a month. Findings indicated that most shops have been affected due to an unfavourable political atmosphere and traffic issues. In addition, shopkeepers urged the owners to lower rents, as these expenses were found to take up a large proportion of income.
